Keeping your gums in good health should be on par with keeping your teeth in check.

In order to ensure your gums provide a good understructure for your teeth for life, you should be attending hygienist appointments, generally every 6 months.

How will regular hygienist visits benefit me?

  • Have plaque removed to prevent the early onset of gum disease (gingivitis).
  • Learn valuable information about how to clean and floss your teeth effectively.
  • Receive guidance on the types of food to swap out of your diet, for a healthier lifestyle.
  • Treat the symptoms of periodontitis (advanced gum disease).

What happens during my routine hygienist appointments?

The main threat to your gum health is plaque. This is a biofilm that is a by-product of the acids created in your mouth, each time you consume sugary and starchy foods. Even a very small amount of sugar will generate the production of plaque, which builds up along your gum line every single day.

Your hygienist will use special instruments to carefully remove plaque, which is a significant step in stopping early gum disease from developing. Should we find you are suffering from gingivitis or periodontitis, we may need to perform a more complex intervention to reverse the damage. This could involve non-surgical root planing treatment, to reach plaque that has become caught in-between individual teeth and gum pockets.

How many times a year should I visit the hygienist?

Whilst the average person should be visiting the hygienist twice a year, some individuals will need to come in and see us more regularly. Should we identify the following risk factors, we are likely to recommend that you attend more often:

  • Smoking
  • Being pregnant
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Poor oral hygiene habits
  • A high sugar diet
  • Gum recession

What happens if I don’t attend the hygienist?

Ignoring symptoms of gum disease such as bleeding gums, loose teeth, changes to your bite, chronic bad breath and receding gums could lead to more complex health problems in the future. It’s also worth mentioning that in some cases, gum disease has no symptoms until it becomes advanced to a severe degree.

Our hygienists here in Blackwood have the skills to identify even the most subtle evidence of gum disease, so that the next steps can be taken to treat and protect your gums from further damage.
